Lean Body Mass Calculator: Boer, James and Hume Formulas
This lean body mass calculator estimates everything in your body that is not fat, including muscle, bone, organs and water, from just your sex, weight and height. Many people watch only the scale, and then they cannot tell whether a change came from fat or from muscle. However, lean mass tells the more useful story, because it links closely to strength, health and daily energy needs. This page explains the three formulas behind the tool, and it then works through a full example step by step.

How the Lean Body Mass Calculator Works
Our lean body mass calculator runs your numbers through three published formulas, and then it shows the average as the headline result. First, the Boer formula uses a simple mix of weight and height, with one set of numbers for men and another for women. Next, the James formula uses the ratio of weight to height, so it reacts more strongly when weight rises for the same height. Finally, the Hume formula uses a different weight and height mix, and it often gives the most cautious figure of the three. Because each formula came from a different group of people, the three results rarely match exactly. As a result, the average is a fairer guide than any single figure on its own.
Lean Body Mass Calculator Example: A Woman of 65 kg
Say a woman weighs 65 kg and stands 165 cm tall, and she wants her lean mass before she starts a strength programme. First, the Boer formula gives 0.252 times 65, plus 0.473 times 165, minus 48.3, which works out to 46.1 kg. Next, the James formula gives 1.07 times 65, minus 148 times the square of 65 divided by 165, which works out to 46.6 kg. Then the Hume formula gives 0.29569 times 65, plus 0.41813 times 165, minus 43.2933, which works out to 44.9 kg. Finally, the average of 46.1, 46.6 and 44.9 is 45.9 kg, or about 101.1 lb. So her estimated fat mass is 65 minus 45.9, which is 19.1 kg, and lean tissue makes up about 70.6 percent of her weight.
Why Lean Mass Matters More Than Weight Alone
Two women can weigh the same and still carry very different amounts of muscle. For example, a woman who trains with weights often holds more lean mass at the same scale weight, and she usually feels stronger and steadier as a result. In contrast, weight lost too fast often includes muscle, which can leave you lighter but weaker. Lean mass also helps you set sensible protein targets, because protein needs follow lean tissue more closely than total weight. In addition, tracking lean mass across three or six months shows whether a programme is building you up or quietly wearing you down.
Honest Limits of Formula Estimates
A formula estimates lean mass, and only a body composition scan measures your tissues directly. For instance, very muscular people and people with high body fat both sit far from the groups these formulas were built on, so their estimates can drift. Still, the same formula used the same way each time tracks change well, and change over time matters more than one perfect number. If you are pregnant, use the pregnancy tools on this site instead, because these adult formulas were not built for pregnancy. Above all, treat your result as a guide for training and food choices, not as a medical judgement.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good lean body mass for a woman?
There is no single good figure, because height changes everything. Instead, compare your lean share of total weight and watch its direction over time. A rising share at a steady weight usually means you are gaining muscle and losing fat.
Which formula is the most accurate?
The Boer formula is the most widely used in clinical work, although no formula matches a scan for every person. That is exactly why this lean body mass calculator shows all three formulas plus the average, so you can see the spread for yourself.
How does lean body mass differ from fat free mass?
The two terms sit very close to each other. Lean body mass includes a small amount of essential fat inside organs and nerves, while fat free mass excludes all fat. In practice, most people use the figures in the same way for training and nutrition planning.
Can I raise my lean body mass?
Yes, and the route is well proven. Strength training two or three times a week, enough protein each day, and enough sleep give your body both the signal and the materials to build muscle. Progress is slow, however, so measure again after eight to twelve weeks rather than every week.
Should I use this tool during pregnancy?
No, because pregnancy changes weight, water and blood volume in ways these formulas cannot read. Use the Pregnancy Weight Gain Calculator on this site instead, and talk to your midwife or doctor about healthy gain for your stage.
